Our Work & History

Our Mission: Watering Seeds of change for effective family transformation through adult and family education.

Our Vision: Within the principles of Isaiah 58:9-12, families and individuals have access to direct and referred services, to increase the opportunity of personal growth, education, health services and other social emotional support through collaborative relationships with community leaders and the families and individuals themselves.

  • A Watered Garden is a 501 c3 non-profit faith based organization dedicated to offering educational and personal growth opportunities to individuals and families. Creative programs make a difference by opening dialogue and communication between cultures. Individuals and families build capacity to move from poverty to prosperity in their home and community through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

  • We are recruiting volunteers through Western Washington University and Whatcom Volunteer Center.

  • We offer additional resources for families as partners with the Opportunity Council, Whatcom County Adult Basic Education and Literacy Organizations, Bellingham Technical College, Western Washington University, Nooksack Valley School District, Food Revolution, Bellingham Food Bank Community Garden, Bellingham Goodwill, WSU Extension Office 4-H and Strengthening Families programs, and Adventist Community Services to continue “watering seeds of change for effective family transformation through adult and family education.”

Established in November 2003

A Watered Garden Family Learning Center (AWG) started by offering Adult English Language Learning classes out of the desire to reduce language barriers experienced by the Hispanic migrant farm-working families in our community, including the strain on family dynamics when their children often had to assume the role of translators. Since then, through the different expertise's of dedicated volunteers and partnerships with many other community service organizations, AWG has become a hub of resources. Our services of the past include basic computer skill classes, tax help, certification in primary and secondary education through the Mexican Consulate, Making SMILES learning pathway children’s class, youth mentorship through 8th grade project, Senior project, and internship opportunities, GED instruction, and much more. We have also been a space for other organizations to host events and distribute resources, including disaster relief, Covid-19 testing, vaccination, and relief resources, mobile health clinics, and much more. Please visit the Current Services page for classes and events currently scheduled.

Since 2004, over 60 students have gone on to become U.S. citizens through citizenship prep classes here at AWG. They and many of our English language students have gained the confidence to construct a better life – whether that was continuing their language learning at the community college, earning their GED, pursuing higher education, or finding better employment. Many have since become bilingual professionals with big hearts that pour back into our community and are eager to help the people whose shoes they were once in.

Volunteers at AWG have been inspired by their experience to continue the work of community empowerment through education, including pursuing continuing education in language instruction, becoming English teachers in places across the world, and leading their own community-enriching non-profits.
